The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary majorly protects Uganda’s only wild rhinoceros that are rapidly being killed. The killing bit made Uganda wisely foresee the need to protect these animals to ensure that dozens of memories after tracking, habituating, and doing several activities of its visitors are maintained and upgraded and not cut short since they were heading to extinction. Rhinoceros are one of the big five animals found in Uganda hence there is a big responsibility and need to safeguard these animals from extinction thus ensuring that the big 5 animals are generationally passed on and living.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established by a combination of various wildlife and conservation organizations with full intentions to restore Uganda’s rhinoceros population. There was a need to protect the rhinos from people and Africa’s predators/ poachers watch them as they breed and grow and then re-introduce the rhinos into Uganda’s protected areas, such as Queen Elizabeth National Park.
While awaiting their reintroduction, visitors can enjoy seeing these remarkable animals while also helping to spread the importance of rhino conservation in the country Located on the Gulu highway in Nakasongola about 180kms from Kampala the city of Uganda. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is sited in 7000 hectares of land which can easily be explored in the shortest time possible if the experienced ranger is on your side. Various activities that blend up more the experience while here are; bird watching, nature walks, relaxing in canoe rides, and the main cause of finding and watching the rhinos guided by the rangers of the sanctuary, the reserve full of wildlife has other species like; crocodiles, hippos, monkeys and antelopes. For ardent birders, there are over 250 bird species and some are endemic.
