Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo is located in southern Uganda and it covers an area of 371 sq km. This park is the nearest of the 10 National Parks, to Kampala; providing a refreshing stopover when traveling to and from the western parks. This is the best place in the country with adversity of wildlife to suchs as the gigantic Eland antelope, as well as zebra, Topi, and Impala. The five lakes within the park attract Hippos, Crocodiles and a variety of water birds, while the surrounding swamps hide secretive papyrus specialists such as the Sitatunga Antelope and red, black and yellow Papyrus Gonalek.

For those interested in Birding, Lake Mburo offers over 300 species of birds including such unusual species as the Shoebill, African fin foot, Saddle-billed stork, Brown-chested Wattled Plover,Carrutter’s Cisticola, Tabora Cisticola, Great Snipe, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill and White-Winged Warbler.

The habitats are equally as diverse as the mammal and birdlife within the park.  There are dry hillsides, rocky outcrops, bushy thickets, open and wooded savannas, in addition to the many lakes and swamp areas.

 

Activities include game drives, boat trips and guided walks. There are visits to the Salt Licks, the Rwonyo Rest Camp, the Rubanga Forest and the Conservation Educational Center.  All are unique to Lake Mburo National  Parik.

MANTANA TENTED CAMP:

This is the only upscale accommodation in Lake Mburo National Park.  Mantana Tented Camp is a small intimate luxury camp, all of MATANAthe 9 tents are situated on wooden decks.  Each spacious tent has large bedrooms, dressing rooms, en-suite bathrooms and verandahs overlooking the lake and valley.  In addition there is a separate sitting room, bar and dining area. All bedding, towels, soap and hot water are provided.  The tents are fitted with solar lighting.

There are many opportunities to see wildlife at the lodge, as the surrounding area is host to zebra, warthogs, waterbuck, impala, buffalo, civet cats and a large variety of birdlife.

Mantana Tented Camp is located in on the Mbarara road,  4 – 5 hours drive from Kampala GPS coordinates: 00.37’01.16 and 30.58’48.04   The altitude is 4,308 feet.

RWONYO REST CAMP:

Rwonyo Rest Camp is managed by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority; a budget facility, offering a true African experience.  The bandas, shaped like wooded hats, were constructed of local materials such as thatched grass and wood.  There are shared showers for the rwonyoBandas  In addition, there are Tented Rooms, which are built on elevated wooden platforms and have private showers.  Both the Bandas and the Tented rooms are fully furnished.

The third optional accommodation is to pitch your own tent.  There is even an option of renting camping equipment locally.

The camp is set up in such a way that many game animals can be viewed right from the camp itself, without going on game drives.  There is a small restaurant on site, in addition to which there are a number of local restaurants in the immediate area around the camp.

MBURO SAFARI LODGE:

This is a luxury, eco-friendly lodge in the Lake Mburu National Park.  They have cottages on raised wooden platforms, covered by grass-thatched roofs.  The cottages are constructed to blend in with the natural environment and are most pleasant, comfortable and safarilodgeequipped with many conveniences.  Every cottage has a private washroom with hot showers and flush toilets and a private balcony; the beds are king-size complete with mosquito nets.  Some cottages have a fully equipped kitchen.

LOCATION:

MBURU SAFARI LODGE is reached through either the Sanga Gate (from Bwindi, Kabale and Mbarara) or the Nshara Gate (from Kampala and Masaka).   There are many signposts along the road to direct you.  The GPS coordinates are:  0.35’8.5 S and 31.3’12.6 E.

RWAKOBO ROCK

This is a mid-range eco-lodge set on a scenic rock outcrop at the edge of Lake Mburo National Park.  The accommodation consists of 8 thatched chalets tucked away in the bush, blending into the natural environment.  Each of the chalets is equipped with a private rockveranda to allow magnificent views over Lake Mburo National Park.

The dining room is situated to provide an excellent view of the rock outcrops that adjoins the park.  Hammocks are available for relaxation. Wildlife viewing is possible as there are many mammals around the lodge, such as zebra, warthog, impala and bushbuck.   There is a water hole beneath the dining area, where the animals congregate.  The Bahima pastoralists of the area are great conservationists; living traditionally in harmony with their environment.

The lodge allows its clients to go on mountain bike safaris and nature walks, within and outside the park.  At night, sitting around the campfire and watching the sunset and later the African sky.

Accommodation is full-board, the daily rate is $125 US per person.  All meals are provided in the dining room; if the guests are out on safari, a packed meal is prepared to take with.

LOCATION:

The lodge is located off the main Kampala to Mbarara road; take the first exit towards Lake Mburo National Park.  The lodge is 8 kilometers from the main road, 1.5 kilometers from the Nshara park gate. The drive is about 3 and a half hours from Kampala.
