Bitukura gorilla family in the Ruhija-Buhoma Sector
Bitukura gorilla group is located in Ruhija sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It was named Bitukura after a river in the forest where the family was first sighted. Bitukura gorilla group’s habituation activity lasted for about 15 months compared to the two years of habituation for mountain gorilla family groups.
The habituation of the gorilla group started in 2007 and it was opened for tourism in 2008.
The Bitukura family and the Kyaguriro families share a close bond and are known to have, what can be described in human terms as get-togethers about once each month.

Bitukura family originally had 4 silverbacks that were fierce and fought for the pride of their family, Ndahura the second youngest silverback is the leader of the family. Ndahura took the throne from Karamuzi who retired from power at the age of 42 years.
Bitukura family is made up of 13 family members with Ndahura the dominant silverback, Karamuzi the 2nd, Rukumu the 3rd, Rukara the 4th with Bettina, Ruhara, Kamuga the adult females in the group, Obia and Mugisha are black backs and Kabandize the young juvenile who crossed over from the Kyaguliro group and Kadogo and Mubwindi both being the infants in the family.
