PARK INFORMATION 
BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST

852a73281a71069d424a1705944bbb41Tracking the Silverback Gorillas and their families in Bwindi National Park is the foremost tourist attraction in Uganda, and possibly the best wildlife encounter in the world.  Here half the world’s population of Mountain Gorillas live in this most diverse rain-forest ecosystem.  There are other primates here as well; Chimpanzees, Black and White Colobus Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, Grey-cheeked Mangabey and L’hoest’s Monkeys.  In addition, there are 350 bird species, 200 butterflies, 27 species of frogs, 163 species of trees and 100 species of ferns.

Bwindi has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site; the 3,315 square meter park has 4 tracking trails, one leading to the highest peak, Rwamunyonyi at 2,607 meters in elevation. These trails, also provide access to the many other attractions of the park, such as rivers, waterfalls, swamps – all with a high level of wildlife concentration throughout.

QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

mweya-safari-lodge-queen-elizabeth-national-park-uganda-2673Queen Elizabeth National Park was founded in 1952 and is Uganda’s most popular park.  The park, with its diverse ecosystems include huge savannah areas, shady humid forest, sparkling lakes and fertile wetlands.  The Big 5 live here, as well as 10 primate species and over 600 bird species.  The Kazinga Channel’s banks are lined with Hippos, Elephants and Buffaloes.  The fig trees of the endless Ishasha Plains are habitat for the elusive tree climbing lions.  In addition to the wildlife opportunities, there are many cultural encounters with local communities, whose people will entertain you with dances, music and storytelling.

Activities in the park are many; birding, visiting Bat Caves, Chimp Tracking, Game Drives, Hiking and Nature Walks, Launch Trips plus working with the Wildlife Research Center, who monitors the birdlife and mammals in the Park.

LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

Buffalos-at-Lake-Mburo-National-ParkLake Mburo National Park is less than 400 square kilometers in size, but is diverse in terms of the various ecosystems that exist within its boundaries; dry hillsides, swamps, rocky outcrops, bushy thickets, open and wooden savannas and forested areas.  It proximity to Kampala on an excellent tarmac road, makes it accessible to many.  There is a wealth of wildlife in Lake Mburo National Park.

In terms of activities, there are Game Drives, boat trips on the lake itself, visits to the Salt Licks, trails through the Rubanga Forest and the Conservation Education Center, where there are educational talks presented regularly.

KIBALE NATIONAL PARK

Kibale National Park is best known for its 14 specie primate population, including 1450 Chimpanzees, Red Colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, the Ugandan Mangabey monkey, Black and White Colobus monkey, Blue monkey, Red-tailed monkey, Bushbaby and Pattas monkey .  Here in the mostly forested park, you can see these primates swinging in the tree branches together with the 300 bird species flying around.  In terms of large animals, there are forest animals, buffaloes, giant forest hogs and numerous antelope species.

This 180 km-long migration corridor for wildlife is one of the most stunning parks in Uganda.   It is considered the Primate Capital of the World.  The park is situated in the heart of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, near For Portal.  The park lies close to the tranquil Ndali-Kasenda crater area and is within a half day’s drive of Queen Elizabeth, Rwenzori Mountains and Semiliki National Parks

chim .There are plenty of activities in Kibale National Park, including Chimpanzee tracking, day hikes and nature walks, Bird Watching and night nature walks.  There are Children’s activities, specifically involving the children in the chimpanzee viewing.  Culturally, Kibale National Park can be an immersion in other people’s cultures easily with a community visit to the towns of  Nyaibanda or Nyakalongo.

MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s oldest and largest conservation area.  It is located at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley; the park is determined by the famous Murchison Falls, where the rushing waters flow from the Nile River, through a narrow 8 meter gorge with a thunderous roar.  The waters plunge 45 meters over the remnant Rift Valley wall.

On the Nile River banks, once can see Elephants, Giraffes, Buffaloes, White Hippos, and of course the Nile Crocodiles.  There are over 450 bird species and 76 species of mammals.

In terms of activities, there are many in addition to the Game Drives.  Here in the park one can be busy going on Nature Walks or Hiking, or Sport Fishing, or just viewing the animals from the water on a Launch.  The opportunities for viewing wildlife are extensive; the park’s enormous size and mixed wildlife population has made it so very popular both for tourists and local Ugandans.

ZIWA RHINO SANCTUARY

 ziwaThe ZIWA RHINO SANCTUARY  is most famous for the Rhinos, but within its 7000 hectares, there are over 20 mammal species and 300 bird species.  The sanctuary is monitored by 80 Rangers, 24/7 and was set up primarily to preserve the Ugandan Rhino population, which was almost totally de-pleated.a few years ago.    This sanctuary is privately owned but run by the Rhino Fund Uganda, under licence.  The Sanctuary was established in 2005 and it has proven successful as the population of many species, in addition to the Rhino, has increased.

The main activity at Ziwa is Rhino Trekking; following the Rhino on foot with a Park Ranger guide, watching their daily activities can be most interesting, and quite unique.  Another popular activity is the 6 am Shoebill Canoe safari.  This also allows visitors to see the variety of water birds on the Lugogo Swamp area of the Sanctuary.    In addition Birding is very popular here and there are many walking trails, guided of course, throughout the Sanctuary.

ITINERARY:

Day 1: ARRIVAL IN UGANDA

Upon arrival at Entebbe International airport, you will be welcomed by your Jewel Safari representative who shall transfer you to your hotel in Kampala and give you a short briefing on the next day’s program.

Depending on the time of your arrival, your Jewel Safari guide will take you on a tour of Kampala City and its environs.  There are many cultural and historical sites within the city to look at, including our Catholic and Protestant Cathedrals, overlooking the city center, the traditional King’s ( Kabaka) Palace and Lake, also within the city center and the famous Kasubi tombs gazetted as UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001 because of its cultural importance where past royalties have been put to rest.  Kampala also has many restaurants and bars, both modern and more traditional – all of which are very entertaining.

Day 2: LAKE MBURO GAME DRIVE 

After breakfast you will be picked up at your hotel in Kampala from where you will set off for Lake Mburo National Park  (220 kms) with a stop over at the Mpambire Drum Makers; after which you will stop at the Equator for a photo shoot and a coffee break at the Equatorial Cafe. Afterwards, you will proceed to Lake Mburo National Park; the drive will take approx. 4 hours in total,

You will reach your accommodation in time for lunch.

After lunch, you will be taken on the Lake Mburo boat ride, where you will see hippos, crocodiles, monitor lizards and hundreds of bird species.  Next, you will be taken on an afternoon Game Drive in search of zebra, impala, eland, topi, oribi, cape buffalos, and with luck, Roan antelopes, leopards, hyenas and  jackals.

Dinner at your accommodation.

Day 3: LAKE MBURO GAME DRIVE & BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST

Early morning breakfast and ready for a 6:30am  start; you will be taken on an early morning Game Drive in search of more of the wildlife in the park.  .After the Game Drive in Lake Mburo National Park, you will visit Jumbo primary school. Jewel Safaris supports this Primary School as part of our giving back to the community.  This is a cultural opportunity for our guests to see what a Ugandan school is like and meet some of the children that we are supporting with education before proceeding  on to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.  You will head through the countryside of Kanungu and continue on to Bwindi, home of the famous Silverback Mountain Gorillas and their families.

In the early evening we shall walk to the nearby community for a cultural performance; local music and dancing.

Over night stay at either Buhoma or Kisoro, depending on the accommodation you selected or the gorilla family to be tracked.

Day 4: Gorilla Tracking

After breakfast, you will have a 730 start; your guide will take you to the Gorilla Track to begin your encounter.  Depending on where the Gorilla are that morning, it could take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours to find the Gorilla family.

.After the Gorilla Trek, you will be returned to your hotel for a rest and dinner.

Day 5:  QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

.For Buhoma guests:.
After breakfast, transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park through the southern sector of the park known as Ishasha, famed for its tree- climbing lions.  Lunch en route to the park.

For Kisoro guests

After breakfast, drive via Kabale meet up with every one  at Queen Elizabeth National Park. You will check in to your hotel and later in the afternoon, your guide will take you to visit to the dry and wet crater region of the park.

Dinner served at your accommodation.

Day 6: MORNING GAME DRIVE & AFTERNOON LAUNCH CRUISE

Early morning breakfast and a 630 start. You will be taken on a morning Game Drive through the Kasenyi area of the Queen Elizabeth Park.

You will then return to where you are staying, for a late second breakfast; relaxing after as you wait for lunch.

After lunch, you will be taken on a 2-hour Launch Cruise along the Kazinga Channel; a waterway that joins Lakes George and Edward.

You will return to your accommodation for dinner.

Day 7: KIBALE NATIONAL PARK – CHIMPANZEE TREK

After breakfast, you will drive to Kibale National Park crossing the equator line again at Kikorongo  with views of  the mystical Rwenzori Mountain range for much of the journey. At arrival, you will check into your accommodation and have lunch.

After lunch, you will be taken to Kanyanchu, Kibale National Park’s  tourism center for a short briefing before setting off for a forest walk in search of the chimpanzees.  (2-3 hours)

After the Chimp Trek, you will return to your accommodation for dinner.

Day 8: MURCHISON FALLS

After breakfast, prepare for a 7:00 departure; you will drive to Murchison Falls National Park, via Kyenjojo on the Hoima Road.  Upon arrival you will go to the top of Murchison Falls before checking in to your overnight accommodation.

Dinner at your accommodation.

Day 9: MORNING GAME DRIVE & AFTERNOON LAUNCH CRUISE

After breakfast prepare for a 630 Game Drive to the delta area of the Murchison Falls Park.

Lunch served at your accommodation.

After lunch, take a Launch Cruise along the Nile River to the bottom of Murchison Falls; where the world’s longest river explodes violently through a narrow cleft in the Rift Valley escarpment to plunge into a frothing pool 43 meters below.

Dinner at your accommodation..

Day 10: ZIWA RHINO & RETURN TO KAMPALA

After breakfast, you will begin your return Kampala, with a stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakansangola, for a Rhino Trek

Lunch at the Sanctuary restaurant.

Proceed to Kampala or continue to Entebbe International Airport from where you will catch up with your onward flight, depending on what your onward plans are..

LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

MBURO SAFARI LODGE:

This is a luxury, eco-friendly lodge in the Lake Mburu National Park.  They have cottages on raised wooden platforms, covered by grass-thatched roofs.  The cottages are constructed to blend in with the natural environment and are most pleasant, comfortable and safarilodge

equipped with many conveniences.  Every cottage has a private washroom with hot showers and flush toilets and a private balcony; the beds are king-size complete with mosquito nets.  Some cottages have a fully equipped kitchen.

 RWAKOBO ROCK

This is a mid-range eco-lodge set on a scenic rock outcrop at the edge of Lake Mburo National Park.  The accommodation consists of 8 thatched chalets tucked away in the bush, blending into the natural environment.  Each of the chalets is equipped with a private rock

veranda to allow magnificent views over Lake Mburo National Park.  The dining room is situated to provide an excellent view of the rock outcrops that adjoins the park.  Hammocks are available for relaxation. Wildlife viewing is possible as there are many mammals around the lodge; there is a water hole beneath the dining area, where the animals congregate.  The Bahima pastoralists of the area are great conservationists; living traditionally in harmony with their environment.

The lodge allows its clients to go on mountain bike safaris and nature walks, within and outside the park.  At night, sitting around the campfire and watching the sunset and later the African sky.
