3 DAY SAFARI  – MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE

 

 PARK  INFORMATION:

This is the most famous and most visited of the Wildlife Parks in Kenya; 270 kms from Nairobi (4-5 hours by road).  Here in Maasai Mara one can find large numbers of Maasai Lions, African Leopards and Tanzanian Cheetahs; the biggest spectacle in East Africa also takes place here….the Wildebeest Migration to and from the Serengeti (Tanzania) from July to October.  Seeing the 1.5 million wildebeest moving in a 40 kilometer long column is truly an amazing sight.  Nothing stops these animals from reaching their goal of traveling the 1000 kilometer journey, Many are taken by the crocodiles as they attempt to cross the Mara River; an opportunity for visitors to get a sense of the enormity and intensity of the annual migration.

Maasai Mara is located in the Southwest of Kenya, combined with the Serengeti is the most spectacular game-viewing eco-systems in the world.  The Reserve stretches 1,510 square kilometers.  Here there are over 95 species of mammals and almost 600 species of birds. The park also is the home of the Maasai tribe, who live traditionally in their bomas made of straw and cow dung.  These people live harmoniously with the wildlife as they have for thousands of years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ITINERARY:

 

Day 1: Depart Nairobi for Maasai Mara and Afternoon Game Drive:

The Jewel Safari guide will meet you in your hotel in Nairobi; after a short briefing, you will depart in our Safari vehicle for Masa Mara National Reserve.  Arrival time will be around lunch time and after checking into your hotel, you will be served llunch.

After lunch, your guide will take you on an Afternoon Game Drive, which lasts 3 or 4 hours.  Masa Mara is famous for the cats; lions, cheetahs, leopards are all present in the Park and there are many of them to see.  In addition, Masa Mara does have dozens of mammals to view, such as the zebra, elephant, buffalo, various antelopes as well as warthogs, wildebeests, eland and hundreds of bird species.

After the game drive, you will be returned to your hotel for dinner and a good night’s sleep.

 

Day 2: Game Drive and/or Balloon Ride

After breakfast in your hotel, you will either go for a morning Game Drive or a Balloon Ride.  The Balloon Ride is a total different perspective; seeing the wildlife roaming the plains of Masa Mara, with a bird’s eye view can be quite extraordinary.  Moving silently over the vast plains, at an elevation, is perfect for watching the many herds of animals below in their daily pursuit of feeding, hunting and resting from the hot sun.

Return to the hotel for lunch and a little relaxation.

After lunch, another Game Drive and/or Balloon Ride to further explore Masa Mara and the wildlife viewing opportunities therein. Game Drives in Maasai Mara are never disappointing, as the vast array of wildlife is quite astonishing.  You will encounter many dozens of species during your drive, including a number of rare and endangered mammals.

Before the sun sets, you will return to your hotel, for a well-needed shower and for dinner.

 

Day 3: Return to Nairobi with Maasai Village en route.

After Breakfast, you will depart Maasai Mara for Nairobi.  En route you will stop at a Maasai Settlement, or Boma, as it is locally called, to encounter one of the last traditional tribes in Africa.  The Maasai are herders as well as hunters and gatherers; living as they have for centuries.  The harmonious way the Maasai live with the other inhabitants of the park, is uplifting to encounter.  The mutual respect and focus on preservation and conservation of the environment is inspirational.

Lunch will be en route, either in Narok town or one of the many towns off the road.  Here you will be taken to a local Kenyan restaurant to experience some traditional food. There also will be opportunities to shop for local handicrafts on the way; many Maasai have set up shops on the road, as well as street vendors in the villages and trading centers you will pass through.

After lunch you will continue your drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.  If time permits, you will be taken to the Giraffe Center in Karen; here you will have the opportunity to feed and touch the giraffes in the Center.

 

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS:

 

  1.  The Governor’s Camp

The Governor’s Camp has provided overnight accommodation for over a century.  It is nestled in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River.  The River itself is alive with hippos, crocodiles and many bird species.

The accommodation is in well appointed luxury tents, all viewing either the Masa River or the plains of Masa Mara; animals are in plenty day and night in this area of Masa Mara National Park.

2.  Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp.

This popular Safari Lodge is situated on the Oloololo escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, with spectacular views of the open plains of the Masa Mara.  The accommodation is in Safari Tents, each with a private bathroom, shower and terrace.  The food is Pan-African cuisine.

3.  Mara Safari Club

The Mara Safari Club in considered the finest accommodation in the Masa Mara National Park.  The property is surrounded on 3 sides by the Mara River, the main Lodge is in the center of the camp, with an indoor restaurant, bar, library.  Off the dek, is a swimming pool with another bar and private massage tents.

The accommodation is in luxury tents, each with 4 poster beds, private bathrooms, as well as outdoor showers.  Each tent is equipped with a veranda for wildlife viewing.

4. Mara Explorer Camp

This accommodation is a budget alternative for adventure travelers; offering basic camping to cottages.  There are hot showers offered, a bar and restaurant.  The power is Solar and is an option for those travelling with pets.

The Camp is 3 kilometers outside the Sekenani Gate of Masa Mara National Reserve, 300 meters from the main road.
