8 Day Safari – Aberdare, Samburu, Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara

PARK INFORMATION

ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK

Aberdare National Park is 100 kilometers north of Nairobi, covering altitudes from 4,300 meters (mountain peaks) to 2,100 meters (bamboo forests and rainforests) above sea level.  The park is 766 square kilometers in size and forms part of the Aberdare Mountain Range.  The park is open for visitors to walk, have picnics and camp in the moorlands.l

The animals easily observed in the park are the African leopard, African bush elephant, East African wild dog, giant forest hog, bushbusk, mountain reedbuck, waterbuck, cape buffalo, suni, side-striped jackal, eland, dulkers, olive baboon, black and white colobus monkey and sykes monkey.  Rarer sightings include the African golden cat and the bongo, an elusive forest antelope that lives in the bamboo forest.  Also there is a large population of black rhino. There are over 250 species of birds, many endangered.aberdare-8


SAMBURU NATIONAL PARK

Samburu is located 350 kilometers Northwest of Nairobi; the park itself is 165 square kilometers in size.  George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lion (Born Free) in Samburu.  Here there is a large variety of animal and bird life, including Masai lions, reticulated giraffe, Tanzanian Cheetah, leopards, buffalo, Grevvy’s zebra, oryx, gerenuk, warthogs, olive baboon, Grant’s gazelle, Kirk’s dik-dik, waterbuck, elephants and hippos. The Ewaso Ng’iro River has large numbers of Nile crocodile.

The park has over 350 bird species including the grey-headed kingfisher, sunbirds, bee-eaters, Marabou stork, tawny eagle, Verreaus’s eagle, bateleur, vulturing guineafowl, yellow-necked spurfowl, lilac-breasted roller, secretary bird, superb starling, northern red-billed hornbill, yellow-billed hornbill, and various vulturessamburu-national-park


LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK

Lake Nakuru is a soda lake, just south of the town of Nakuru, protected by the Lake Nakuru National Park.  The abundance of algae, created by the flamingo droppings, in turn, attracts the literally millions of flamingos that line the shore.  In addition, other attracted species are exotic mammals such as the 30 Eastern Black Rhinos,  70 White Rhinos, giraffe and baboons.  The Park also has many Maasai Lions, African Cheetahs and Tanzanian Leopards.

MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE:

This is the most famous and most visited of the Wildlife Parks in Kenya; 270 kms from Nairobi (4-5 hours by road).  Here in Maasai Mara one can find large numbers of Maasai Lions, African Leopards and Tanzanian Cheetahs; the biggest spectacle in East Africa also takes place here….the Wildebeest Migration to and from the Serengeti (Tanzania) from July to October.  The 1.5 Wildebeest travel 1000 

Maasai Mara is located in the Southwest of Kenya, combined with the Serengeti is the most spectacular game-viewing eco-systems in the world.  The Reserve stretches 1,510 square kilometers.  Here there are over 95 species of mammals and almost 600 species of birds.serengeti

 


ITINERARY

DAY 1:  ARRIVE NAIROBI

Your Jewel Safari guide will pick you up at Jomo Kenyatta Airport, Nairobi and take you to your hotel; upon arrival, you will be given a short briefing of your itinerary.  Depending on what time you arrived, your guide will give you a tour of Nairobi sites.  Nairobi has a Maasai Market, and depending on what day of the week, depends on where the market is; it is an excellent place to purchase Maasai handicrafts.

You will have dinner in the hotel and an early night, ready for the Safari in the morning.

 

DAY 2:  ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK AND ABERDARE COUNTRY CLUB

After breakfast, you will depart Nairobi for Aberdare National Park.  En route you will pass through the town of Nyeri; where Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the International Boy Scouts, spent the last/ few years of his life, and was buried here.  In addition, there are a number of local markets and handicraft workshops en route; where you can stop and see the local produce and handicrafts produced locally.

You will arrive at the Aberdare Country Club for lunch.

After lunch, your guide will take you on a Game Drive through the Aberdare Forest. 

Dinner at your accommodation.

 

DAY 3:  SAMBURU GAME RESERVE:

After breakfast, you will drive to the Samburu Game Reserve

Lunch at your accommodation.

After lunch and a rest, you will be taken on an afternoon Game Drive in the Samuru Game Reserve.

Dinner at your accommodation.

DAY 4:  SAMBURU GAME RESERVE.

You will spend the day exploring Samburu Game reserve.  Lunch will be served as a picnic en route.

Evening dinner served at your accommodation.

 

DAY 5:  LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, you will pack up and drive to the Lake Nakuru National Park in the Great Rift Valley.

Lunch will be at your accommodation in Nakuru.

After lunch, you will be taken on a tour of the world’s best known bird sanctuaries

After breakfast, depart north of Aberdare Mountains and descend into the Great Rift Valley for Lake Nakuru. Visit one of the world’s well-known bird sanctuaries.

Dinner at your accommodation.

DAY 6: MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE

After breakfast, you will depart the Rift Valley region and drive southwest to Maasai Mara National Reserve.

En route you will stop in the town of Narok for an African meal in a local restaurant.

After lunch, you will continue into the Maasai Mara National Reserve, and check in at your accommodation. After a little rest, you will go on an Afternoon Game Drive in the Park.

Dinner at your accommodation.

DAY 7:  MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE:

After breakfast in your hotel, you will go for a morning Balloon Ride.  The Balloon Ride is a total different perspective; seeing the wildlife roaming the plains of Masa Mara, with a bird’s eye view can be quite extraordinary.

Return to the hotel for lunch and a little relaxation.

After lunch, you will be taken on an afternoon Game Drive to further explore Masa Mara and the wildlife viewing opportunities therein.

Return to your hotel for dinner.

DAY 8:  RETURN TO NAIROBI:

After breakfast, you will start your drive back to Nairobi.  There will be opportunity to stop on the rim of the Rift Valley, where on the side of the road there are many vendors selling Maasai handicrafts.

Lunch will be in Karen, on the outskirts of Nairobi.

After lunch you will be taken to the Giraffe Center in Karen to have an incredible wildlife encounter with the giraffe.

In the late afternoon, you will be taken to your hotel in Nairobi, or the airport, depending on your onward plans.

The Lodge entrance is from a timbered drawbridge from the Mount Kenya forest, up on to the wooden decks of our Tree Hotel.  The feeling is like boarding a ship; log panelled walls, timbered game-viewing decks and winding stairs leading to a selection of cabin-styled rooms.  The lodge is within the Mount Kenya National Park, next to the Aberdare National Park.  It is a 2 -3 hour drive to Nairobi by road.

The Governor’s Camp has provided overnight accommodation for over a century.  It is nestled in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River.  The River itself is alive with hippos, crocodiles and many bird species.

LAKE NAKURU LODGE:

The Lodge offers a choice of accommodation; family rooms, cottages and suites are available.  In addition to the restaurant fare, there are Bush barbecues to give the guests an opportunity to feed on unusual meats.  The lodge offers views of Lake Nakuru and the flamingo population.  The hotel was established some 100 years ago and has traditionally been considered the best accommodation in the area.
