Bitukura gorilla group is located in Ruhija. It was named Bitukura after a river from which it was first sighted. Bitukura gorilla  group ’s habituation activity lasted for only one year.

The habituation experience commenced in July 2007 and ended in October 2008 when the gorilla family group was declared free and opened for gorilla trekking activity for tourist.

They broke all the odds and prior habituation group of other mountain gorilla family groups that always lasted between 2-3 years. This was a relatively easy group to habituate. Do you agree?

The Bitukura family is peaceable, with little in way of the politics and monkeyshines prone to. Ndahura sees to that. The Bitukura and Kyaguriro families share a close bond and are known to have, what can be described in human terms as get-togethers about once each month.

The biggest mystery surrounding this peaceable family is the migration of its eldest juvenile daughter to the Kyaguriro family. Whereas it is known that on reaching adulthood, female gorillas are prone. No that is not the case with the Bitukura gorilla group members.

Bitukura family is made up of 13 family members with Ndahura the dominant silverback, Karamuzi the 2nd, Rukumu the 3rd, Rukara the 4th with Bettina, Ruhara, Kamuga the adult females in the group, Obia and Mugisha are blackbacks and Kabandize the young juvenile who crossed over from the Kyaguliro group and Kadogo and Mubwindi both being the infants in the family.
