NATIONAL PARK INFORMATION
LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
Lake Manyara National Park stretches for 50 kilometers along the base of the 600-meter high Rift Valley escarpment. Here in this relatively small National Park, there are many distinct sectors, each with its own wildlife species. The park is 330 square kilometers in size, of which 200 square kilometers is the lake itself. The park is famous not only for its game drives, but its night game drives. There are cultural tours with local people, as well as canoeing around the lake, to get a different perspective on the park.
There is a jungle-like groundwater forest where you will encounter troops of baboons lounging along the roadside. Here in for mahogany trees you will see blue monkeys, bushbuck and noisy hornbills flying around. As you leave the forest for the grassy floodplains and alkaline lake, you will encounter buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra herds, as well as giraffe. Inland of the floodplain, you will encounter a narrow belt of acacia woodland, where you will find the legendary tree-climbing lions and large herds of elephants. In addition, there are many mongoose and dik dik, as well as klipspringers roaming around between the acacia trees. There are over 400 species of birds including Pink Flamingos and other water birds such as pelicans, cormorants and storks.
TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Tarangire National Park is approximately 2,850 square kilometers in size; just south of Lake Manyara. The landscape and vegetation is incredibly diverse, with a mix that is unique in the northern safari circuit. The park is most famous for its huge numbers of elephants, tree climbing lions and baobab trees. In addition, there are many zebras, wildebeests, waterbuck, giraffe and olive baboons.
The park is a haven for bird watchers; over 550 bird species. particularly along the swamps by the Tarangire River; the most breeding species of any place in the world. Numerous termite mounts dot the landscape; the abandoned ones are often seen to be the home to dwarf mongoose. Tarangire has the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem; there are Kori bustards, ostrich, ground hornbills, fringe-eared oryx, and long-necked gerenuk regularly spotted. In Tarangire, the pythons climb trees, lounging in the branches as well as the Elephants.
The Ngorongoro Crater was formed by a large vocano exploding and collapsing into itself; the crater is 610 meters deep and its floor covers 260 square meters. Here in the Ngorongoro Crater, wildlife and humans co-exist; the only conservation area in Tanzania where this has been permitted. Cultivation is limited to a subsistence level, to protect the wildlife’s ecosystem.
Over 25,000 large animals live in the crater; including black rhino, Cape buffalo, hippos, blue wildebeest, Grant’s zebra, eland, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, waterbucks, Tanzanian cheetah, East African wild dog and African leopard. It also has the densest known population of Maasai Lions.
